Accredited Online Doctorate Degrees are Available in More Fields than Ever Before

The world of distance learning is ever expanding and one of the fastest growing aspects of the new educational paradigm is the appearance of more and more accredited online doctorate degrees.  There are online doctorate degrees in a growing number of technical and academic fields, and as more respected traditional colleges involve themselves in the distance learning scene, getting an online PhD has become more respectable too.  Plus, as time passes the wholly online colleges and universities have begun to develop very credible reputations of their own.

But is getting an online PhD for you?

That really depends!  You shouldn’t rule it out until you’ve thought about the career options in your field that an online doctorate degree may open up.  In some fields, accredited online doctorate degrees are a path to career security.  For example, business and accounting PhD holders are few and far between–which means it’s likely you could get placed teaching in business and accounting departments at a university if you so choose.  University jobs may not make the most money, but for those with PhDs in critically low fields, they can be more profitable–and of course, the value of tenure is not to be overlooked.

In fields where there is rich ground for original research, people who are enrolling in accredited online doctorate degrees will find themselves at the forefront of their fields in no time.  This includes fields like environmental studies, sustainable engineering, and energy economics.

Whether or not you should begin looking at accredited online doctorate degrees depends on your unique position, and your own career plans.  But as more PhDs become available online, in more fields, it’s likely that an increasing number of students will decide to go for their doctorates.
