Accredited Online PhD Programs
Before you decide to apply to any accredited online PhD programs,
read this advice from grad students…
Too many people apply to PhD programs because “it’s the highest degree you can get.” With accredited online PhD programs becoming more and more commonly available, there are likely to be more students making this choice.
Here’s what current and past grad students had to say when asked “What did you wish you had known before you enrolled?”
- There’s hardly any coursework with accredited online PhD Programs. That’s bad in a way because I missed the aspect of being a student, and having the camaraderie of fellow classmates, even just online. But it was also great because I HATED the coursework! If you aren’t interested in research–I mean primary, hardcore research–you’re not going to enjoy taking classes in statistical analysis.
- Quality of life as a grad student… well… it sucks. I mean, there’s just no other way to say it. You’re poor. You’re way overworked. Your advisor might be great but you still get loaned out to other faculty as a sort of extra brain. Teaching undergrads was miserable for me–I enrolled to research. Given my dislike of teaching, I wish I’d looked at accredited online PhD programs instead, even though I would have had to pay more.
- Applying to distance learning doctorate programs was the best decision I made. But it was not at all what I expected it to be. The level of specialization was intense. I didn’t realize I’d be spending five to seven years tackling one research project. But I loved it.
- I wish someone had told me to think twice before applying to accredited online PhD programs just to get a job. Don’t get me wrong–I don’t regret it for a second! But my PhD definitely didn’t fulfill my expectations as far as getting me a career.
