How is Getting Your Online PhD in History Different Than an On-Campus Program?
Not all that different at all, to be frank. After all, most PhD work doesn’t take place in any classroom to begin with. Naturally your online PhD in history program will require some classwork–you’ll have courses in types of research methods and in analysis. But most of your work, just like with a campus-based program, will be conducted independently, in a variety of places, as you research.
An online PhD program differs mainly in how you communicate with your advisor. Most programs do have a limited requirement for residency–i.e. a couple weeks in the summer, or a few weekends scattered throughout the year. These residencies give you a chance to meet with your online PhD in history advisor and fellow doctoral candidates in person. Other than that, you’ll communicate via email, chat, and instant message, or over the phone.
You’ll need to research your program just as carefully as you would if it were a traditional on-campus program. Check out the accreditation of schools offering online PhD in history programs before you even think about applying. Look at other things too, like what their alumni are up to. And of course, choosing your advisor is a very important aspect of your history PhD study.
