It hasn’t been that long ago that the very idea of online doctoral program education options would have been scoffed at as either evidence of the speaker’s sense of humor, or something more unsavory, like a scam.  And to be sure, the Internet has seen its share of diploma mills, and the scammers always find a new loophole.  But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t consider getting your doctorate online.  It just means to be careful to check out the program before you enroll.

What fields of study offer online doctoral program education options?

You name it.  Well, maybe every type of doctoral program isn’t yet available online–but the day is coming.  As it is, almost every field in academia and professional application has their toe in the water when it comes to distance learning online, including doctoral programs.  Business, education, sociology, religious topics, accounting, history, sciences–the list goes on.

Online doctoral program education looks good, but is it the same as on-campus education?

Naturally there are some differences, but because accreditation associations take a particularly hard look at online programs in order to combat the bad reputation of diploma mills and scammers, online doctoral program education options have become more and more reputable.  There are a few traditionalists in academia that might question an online doctorate more closely, but as they say–the proof is in the pudding.  If you compose an excellent dissertation and have the research to back it up, and the understanding of method, theory, and philosophy in your field to be a pioneer, whether your degree is from and on-campus or online doctoral program education option isn’t going to matter.

The main thing, of course, is that you need to make sure you have the resources that you would otherwise have at your university of choice.
