First, you will be required to complete a certain number of courses. In general, this will be between 75 and 100 credit hours. There will be core classes and specialty classes. You can choose to specialize in clinical psychology, counseling, social psychology, and biopsychology, just to name a few. You may be required to pass a comprehensive written exam as well.
PhD Dissertation
Once you have successfully completed your coursework, you will begin work on your dissertation. You will likely have already had to state the topic of your research during the admission process or the coursework section of the program. From here, you will expound on your topic and perform your research. You will have to orally defend your findings in front of a committee.
Upon graduation, you have two distinct career paths, practice or research. Many graduates will hold positions in universities or go into private practice. Whatever your ultimate career goal is, it is important to remember that any PhD program will require that you are very driven and motivated.
